Matthew Algie & Company
Company Profile
Established in 1864, Matthew Algie is a family-owned business, ethically sourcing exceptional coffees from around the world and roasting them to perfection at our award-winning Glasgow roastery. We initiated the espresso revolution in the UK by launching the first Fairtrade espresso, followed by the world’s first triple-certified espresso. We supply and maintain top grade coffee equipment, with our nationwide team of highly skilled service engineers. We also provide full product and equipment training. Through our Espresso Warehouse brand, we offer a wide range of café supplies, such as hot chocolate, syrups, alternative milks, tea, barista kit, crockery and more.
Approach to Healthcare
We are proud of our history, supporting and supplying hot beverage solutions to many Healthcare customers. We have a proven understanding of the sector, and you can trust you will be supported by a dedicated team of people who truly understand your environment and your unique business. We offer you the local support, service coverage and the dedicated account management you need to help everything run smoothly. We are a one-stop solution for your hot beverage offer. Our passion in what we do is aimed at bringing the highest quality and freshness, perfectly tailored for every customer and not just to deliver a product range.
Impact of Products/Services
Our key strengths lie in our structure and flexibility, as we manage our own product range, we can work with our Healthcare customers to source nutritional and healthier product options. As we also manage our own equipment, Field Service Engineers and a team of dedicated professionals, we can adapt to our customer requirements to ensure your equipment is maintained to the best condition possible to minimise downtime.
Innovation
At Matthew Algie, we always have our eye on the future. We are continually looking at market trends and innovation within the hot beverage industry and we have a team who analyse these industry trends. From these findings we update our portfolio on a regular basis and create tools to help you capitalise on them. We conduct our own field-based research to cover market innovation in seasonal drinks, with the key pieces taking place during the Summer and Winter periods. We also research specific market segments, such as independent coffee shops and low-cost coffee operators. The output from these visits, conducted by senior marketing and coffee specialists (photos; pricing; menu development; innovation etc.) can be summarised and distributed to our customers. Based on our findings, we regularly create our own delicious seasonal recipes and supporting point of sale, using core ingredients from our portfolio. For example, this season we have launched a new Pistachio Syrup, which in the last 2 years has become a craze flavour across food and beverage.
Future Direction
Sustainability has been at the heart of everything we do for more than three decades, and we continue to strive to find ways to reduce our impact on the world around us. We have launched our Net Zero by 2040 Roadmap, to be net zero across our own operations by 2035 and be net zero across our entire value chain by 2040. Having already made a start measuring our emissions and exploring our indirect impact, the next step is to focus on our reduction strategy to reach our ambitious targets. We are currently working on a project with one of our coffee suppliers in Honduras, looking at calculating emissions on the ground, and helping producers to transition to more efficient, lower carbon farming. This project also includes reforesting areas around the coffee crops and creating a source of carbon credits that farmers can sell. To continue strengthening our customer service levels, we have a project to be best in class within our technical and field service departments. To help us achieve this we have pledged to employ an additional 10 engineers in 2025, and we have also majorly invested in our internal IT infrastructure and our Glasgow Roastery.
